FACTORS AFFECTING ADOPTION OF BANANA INSURANCE IN RATNANAGAR MUNICIPALITY OF CHITWAN DISTRICT, NEPAL

Banana farmers are constantly exposed to weather and climate risks, leading to heavy losses in the fields of Chitwan district in Nepal. Crop insurance is the main option to overcome the impact of crop losses due to natural disasters such as wind storm, heavy rain and other hazardous situations. The main aim of this study was to find out the major factors that affect the adoption of banana insurance in Chitwan District, Nepal. Ratnanagar Municipality was purposively selected for the study. All the 34 insured banana farmers registered in Chitwan Banana Association having at least five years of experience was considered and 34 non-insured farmers from nearby area so that total of 68 farmers became study samples. Data was collected through structured questionnaires from respondents. To determine the factors affecting adoption of banana insurance binary logistic regression model was used. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the socio-demographic characteristics. This study revealed that 73.5% of insured and 29.4% of non-insured farmers have attended agriculture related training, while 100% of insured banana farmers were involved in banana association but only 26.46% among non-insured farmers. Binary logistic regression showed that farmers with leased land, attained agriculture training and years of cultivation were more likely to have insurance.
