Competitive strategies are those practices chosen by a business to pursue competitive advantage, either via lowering costs compared to its competition or by differentiating itself along dimensions valued by customers to remain competitive in the industry. This study analysed the effect of cost leadership strategy on the economic performance of meat-based enterprises in Kano Metropolis, Nigeria. Primary data was collected using a structured questionnaire from 333 multistage randomly sampled meat-based enterprises. The data was analysed using a descriptive, Likert scale framework and structural equation modelling (SEM). The study findings revealed use of sharp practices, increased production quantity, choosing to use cheaper operation equipment, use of energy-saving inputs, and reduction in management spending as the agreed (mean = 3.869) cost leadership practices implemented by the meat-based enterprises in the study area. Furthermore, findings showed that the cost leadership strategies positively impacted the economic performance of their business (β = 0.399, P < 0.000). The enterprises shall therefore be specifically trained and encouraged by relevant agencies to engage in cost leadership competitive strategy implementation, given the fact that it enhances the economic performance of their businesses.
